Frequently asked questions

For listeners

General

What is Siyana?

Siyana is an app for listening to Islamic sermons, lectures and classes, published directly by the imams and speakers themselves. It is a place for listening, not a social network: there are no comments, no messaging and no “like” counter.

Is Siyana free?

Yes. Listening is completely free for listeners, and the app contains no advertising.

Do I need an account to listen?

No. You can listen without an account. A free account also lets you follow your imams and mosques, keep your favourite content, download it to listen offline and be notified of new publications.

From what age can I create an account?

Creating an account is reserved for people aged 15 or over. Below that age, Siyana is used with a parent, under their responsibility.

Listening

What is the difference between a sermon, a lecture and a class?

The sermon is the one the imam delivers on Friday, at the mosque. A lecture is a talk on a topic, often spiritual. A class is teaching, often in several parts, that you follow while taking notes.

Why can't I speed up or skip ahead in a sermon?

Out of respect for the sermon and for the imam, who put his whole heart into it. It is listened to as it was delivered. Lectures and classes, on the other hand, let you change the speed and go back or forward a few seconds.

What is a series?

Some content is published in several parts. In the player, all the parts of the series are shown under the playback buttons. An ongoing series is marked “More coming soon”.

Where can I find classes?

Classes have their own classroom, reached from the library. They do not appear in the lists of sermons and lectures, so that everyone can find their way easily.

How do I find content?

You can search by keyword, imam, mosque or topic. Topics are grouped into broad families: tap a family to see all its content, or a specific topic to narrow it down. A date filter is also available. Results are always shown from newest to oldest: no imam is promoted above another.

Following and keeping

How do I get notified of new publications?

Add an imam or a mosque to your favourites. You will receive a notification for each new publication, and new content will appear in the “New” tab.

I don't receive notifications, why?

On some phones, battery saving puts apps to sleep and delays their notifications. In your phone's settings, under Battery, remove Siyana from the apps put to sleep. New content is in any case visible when you open the app.

How do I keep a piece of content?

Tap “Favourites” in the player. Your favourites are saved on your phone.

Downloading and sharing

Can I listen without an internet connection?

Yes: tap “Download” in the player. The content stays in the app and can only be played from Siyana. It is deleted if you uninstall the app.

Why is the “Share” button missing on some content?

Each imam and speaker chooses, content by content, whether to allow link sharing. When they don't, the content remains available to everyone in the app, and can be downloaded for offline listening.

What does the person I share content with receive?

A link that opens the content in the Siyana app, with its title, imam, mosque and date. No audio file is ever sent on its own.

Sisters' talks

What are “Sisters' talks”?

Content published by women speakers and reserved for sisters. It is only visible from a woman's account.

Reporting

How do I report content?

Tap the small flag in the player, then choose a reason. Every report is reviewed by the Siyana team. You can only report the same content once, and your identity is never shared with the author of the content.

Sadaqa

What is Sadaqa on Siyana?

Imams and speakers pay a yearly subscription to publish on Siyana. With Sadaqa, you can pay this subscription on behalf of an imam or speaker, from their public profile: either in one go, or in monthly instalments of €2. The button disappears as soon as their subscription for the year is fully paid.

My account

How do I delete my account?

In “My account”, tap “Delete account”. The deletion is immediate and permanent. You can also follow the instructions on the “Delete my account” page of siyana.org.

For imams and speakers

Registration

Who can publish on Siyana?

Imams, affiliated with a mosque, and speakers: lecturers, teachers and associations. Every account is checked and approved manually by the Siyana team before any publication.

What is the difference between an imam account and a speaker account?

An imam account can publish sermons, lectures and classes, and has The Vault. A speaker account can publish lectures and classes.

Can I change my account type?

An imam can ask to switch to a speaker account, for example if he no longer serves as an imam. However, a speaker account can never become an imam account again: the role of imam relies on being linked to a guarantor mosque and on a verification specific to this type of account.

Why do I need to be linked to a mosque?

The mosque vouches for the imam's identity and role. This guarantee protects listeners, imams and Siyana alike.

How long does approval take?

Each request is reviewed one by one by our team. You are notified by email and by notification as soon as your account is approved.

What is training mode?

Before his first published sermon, each imam goes through a training mode to get familiar with recording. Publishing is then unlocked from the following Friday.

Workspace and security

What is the workspace?

It is the space where you record, import, prepare and publish your content. It is protected by a personal code.

What is The Vault?

The Vault gathers your published sermons. It is protected by a second code, separate from the workspace code.

How do I change my codes?

In “My account”, under Security.

Publishing

How do I publish content?

Three ways: record your sermon live on Friday, record a lecture or class from the Studio, or import an audio file already recorded on your phone. You then fill in its details (title, type, topic, mosque, language and, if you wish, the verses, hadiths or books cited), and publish it.

Can I import a sermon already delivered?

Yes. When importing, choose the type “Sermon”. It must be a sermon already delivered on a Friday, at the mosque, before the congregation. It will join The Vault and the library.

Why are the topic and mosque never preselected?

So that each piece of content is classified with care, by a deliberate choice, and never by mistake.

Can I edit published content?

Yes, its details: title, description, theme and cited references. In your workspace, “Published” tab, tap ⋮ then “Edit details”. The audio, mosque and language cannot be changed: to correct the audio, delete the content and publish a new version.

Where are my drafts?

In your workspace. Note: drafts are saved on your phone only. They are lost if you uninstall the app.

What happens if I leave the app while sending?

For a lecture or class, sending continues in the background and a notification tells you when publishing is complete. For a sermon, stay in the app until the end of the transmission.

Series and classes

How do I publish a series?

In the content's details, create a series or choose an existing one. The mosque, topic, language and sisters-only access are set by the first part and carried over automatically to the following ones. Tick “last episode” on the final part to close the series.

What should I specify for a class?

In addition to the topic and language, the level (beginner, intermediate, advanced or all levels) and, if you wish, the book studied.

Distribution

Who can listen to my content?

All listeners, in the app, including offline thanks to downloading. You can choose, content by content, whether to allow link sharing. The default setting is in “My account”, under “Default sharing”. Written reminders can always be shared.

Who can publish content reserved for sisters?

Only women speakers. A sermon cannot be reserved for sisters.

Can I delete published content?

Yes, at any time, from your workspace. You can also delete a whole series. Deletion is permanent, and you will be asked to confirm.

Reports

What happens if my content is reported?

Every report is reviewed by a member of the Siyana team, never by an algorithm. If reports become significant, you are informed by email and by notification. The identity of those who reported is never shared with you.

Subscription

How much does publishing on Siyana cost?

Publishing is subject to a yearly subscription: €20 if paid in one go, or €2 per month. Listeners can pay it for you, fully or in part, through Sadaqa.

My account

How do I delete my account?

From “My account”. You choose to close your account and leave your content online for listeners, or to delete everything. The request takes effect 28 days later: until then, simply sign back in to cancel it. Content under review following a report is kept temporarily for that review, then deleted.

Contact

How do I contact the Siyana team?

By email at contact@siyana.org, or from the “Help & support” section of the app.
